Natsume Takashi hat die Gabe Geister zu sehen und als er ein merkwürdiges Buch von seiner Großmutter erbt, erfährt er auch warum diese ihn verfolgen. Jetzt besteht ein Vertrag zwischen den Geistern und den Besitzer dieses Buches, das auch ihre Namen enthält. Fest entschlossen, versucht Natsume mit Hilfe einer außergewöhnlichen Katze die Geister zu befreien und den Vertrag aufzulösen.
